Slate Quarry Park

Monday night (12.28) the Poultney Town Selectboard voted to sign the construction contract with Matthew Schinski of Schinski Landscaping in Wells to build the Slate Quarry Park on Main Street in Poultney this coming spring.

We thank the Selectboard, Town Manager Paul Donaldson and Economic Development Coordinator Sarah Pelkey for their support throughout this process. We have indeed been high maintenance.

The fundraising goes on for the items left out of the contract. We hope the good people of Poultney can add a bit more to the monies we've raised in our latest appeal. We have raised over $9,000 since we began our current campaign on Nov. 13th. Thanks so much for your support. If we can do that again over the next few months, we'll have everything we need to make a beautiful park!

Slate Quarry Park

The Slate Quarry Park will be built in the spring of 2021. The team of Matt Schinski of Schinski Landscaping in Wells and Brian Post of Standing Stone Landscape Architecture of Springfield, Vt, who designed the park and developed the construction plans, will begin construction by May 1st

Brian is a certified dry stone master craftsman with over 20 years of experience building stone walls.

The art of dry-stone wall building will be on display for several weeks in May and June as the construction begins. The walls, the hardscape paths and park floor will be made entirely of slate.

The park will pay tribute to those extraordinary workers who carried their lunch buckets to work every day (and still do). We hope the park will be a source of enjoyment and pride to the residents of and visitors to the Slate Valley.

To keep everyone apprised of the latest news on the park, we have a contractor who will be announced as soon as the contract is signed. The build will not begin until this coming spring. And we have a bit more fundraising to do that we will keep in-house as much as possible. Watch this space and our website at www.slatequarrypark.org for more information. The Slate Quarry Park build is getting closer every day. The design is set, the park has been transferred to the town and the Slate Quarry Park Group has raised the money to construct the project (maybe a little more - there are always contingencies).
